Facebook Renames Company to 'Meta'
jpnn.com, AMERIKA - Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the social media company will change its name to Meta. This comes while Facebook has been facing allegations of prizing profits over combating misinformation and harmful speech, as well as accusations of being a monopoly.
Zuckerberg revealed the new name at the company's annual AR/VR conference on Thursday (28/10).
He revealed his plans to build the "metaverse", a digital world that comprises virtual reality and augmented reality.
"We believe the metaverse will be the successor of the mobile internet," he said.
"We'll be able to feel present - like we're right there with people no matter how far apart we actually are."
He also expected that the metaverse would reach a billion people within the next decade.
Zuckerberg admitted that he currently held official Meta accounts on Twitter and meta.com.
Recently, a new whistleblower, who was a former Facebook employee, testified before the US Senate, explaining how Facebook could inflict harm on users. (ddy/mcr20/jpnn)
