Indonesia Expects ASEAN to Overcome Environmental Challenges

jpnn.com, JAKARTA - Indonesia hosted the 16th Asean Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME) virtually on Thursday (21/10), with Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya chairing the meeting.

Siti said the environmental issues were needed to be anticipated at the ASEAN level through cooperative collaboration that was in line with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.

"This decade is important to prevent, stop, and repair ecosystem degradation throughout the world, including the Southeast Asian region," said the minister.

Siti emphasized the need to adapt the mindset and real action by implementing the reimagine-recreate-restore method in environmental management.

Issues discussed at the meeting included the conservation of nature and biodiversity, the coastal and marine environment, water resources management, eco-friendly cities, chemicals and waste, environmental education and issues of sustainable consumption and production, as well as climate change.

The meeting resulted in several agreements, including the nomination of cities for the 5th ASEAN ESC Award and the 4th Certificates of Recognition, as well as the ASEAN-China Joint Statement on Enhancing Green and Sustainable Development Cooperation.

It also resulted in several documents:

(1) ASEAN Joint Statement on Chemicals and Waste to 2021 Meetings of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions;
