jpnn.com, BALI - The 2021 Indonesia Masters has created a number of surprises in the first round.

Top players, such as Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (men's singles), as well as Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti (mixed doubles) were eliminated early.

Ginting, who was defending his Indonesia Masters champion title, lost three games 21-19, 14-21, 13-21 to the representative of Thailand, Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

Meanwhile, Praveen and Melati had to surrender to the double advantage of world number 178 players, Dhruv Kapila and N. Sikki Reddy from India, with a score of 11-21 and 20-22.

The defeat of the two Indonesian representatives was noted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

On its official website, BWF was surprised to see their elimination in the first round.

"The defeat extends the Indonesians’ wait for a title to 20 months. They last finished champions at last year’s All England," wrote BWF on the mixed doubles.

"Another home favourite fell at the first hurdle at the 2021 Indonesia Masters as men’s singles defending champion Anthony Sinisuka Ginting was bettered by Kunlavut Vitidsarn in three games," added BWF in a separate writing piece.
