jpnn.com, LONDON - Aston Villa have finally appointed Steven Gerrard as their new coach for the 2021/22 Premier League season.

The 41-year-old replaces Dean Smith, who was sacked after Aston Villa suffered five straight defeats. As a result, Aston Villa is still struggling at the bottom of the board, precisely in the 16th position.

After being elected as Aston Villa coach, Gerrard will try to save the club nicknamed The Villa to stay afloat in the highest caste competition in English football.

"Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new head coach," said Gerrard.

"In my conversations with [co-owners] Nassef [Sawiris], Wes [Edens] and the rest of the board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims."

Aston Villa became Gerrard's second club after Rangers since he decided to enter the world of coaching in 2018. Gerrard is a Liverpool legend who has played 710 games from 1998 to 2015. With the Reds, the player who is identical to the number 8 has won nine trophies.

Gerrard had a career in the American League with the LA Galaxy before finally retiring in 2016.
