jpnn.com, BATANG - Thousands of families in Batang regency, Central Java, have stopped receiving the government's social assistance through the Family Hope Program (PKH).

Batang Social Agency head Joko Tetuko said that over 4,000 families resigned from the program voluntarily because they considered themselves capable of being economically independent.

"Aid recipients who quit because of their own choice feel capable even without the PKH," said Joko, as quoted by jateng.jpnn.com.

Joko said that about 32,000 families in his area were recorded as recipients of the PKH last year. This year, it has dropped to 28,000 families.

He added the selection of beneficiaries had been detailed because it was carried out by the central government, while the local government only submitted data.

"So, I believe that the PKH has been right on target," said Joko.

Batang Regent Wihaji said that he was optimistic the state aid could alleviate poverty in the region.

"The verification and validation are now better, so the benefits are more right on target," said Wihaji. (antara/mcr20/jpnn)
