jpnn.com, CHINA - The Chinese government claims to be the largest democracy in the world with the most direct voters compared to any other country.

More than 900 million citizens participated in choosing representatives for members of the people's congress at the district and city levels in 2016 and 2017, according to the white paper on Democracy China as monitored by ANTARA Beijing, Tuesday.

Nearly 2.48 million people were directly elected to represent districts and cities at the people's congress. Currently, public participation in the election has reached 90 percent.

The white paper entitled 'China: Democracy That Works' was published and launched by the Information Office of the Chinese Government Council (SCIO) on Saturday (4/12).

The launch of the white paper was intentionally to precede the implementation of the Democracy Summit held by the United States from Thursday (9/12) to Friday (10/12).

The white paper further emphasizes the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party in the democratic process in the country of 1.4 billion people.

Chinese democracy is broader, more genuine, and more effective than US democracy. US politicians represent interest groups, but in China the whole democratic process guarantees changes in people's lives, Deputy Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Guo Zhenhua said.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Zhao Lijian added that democracy is built on the history of a country and adapted to the situation of local people.
