jpnn.com, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Thomas Cup team was ridiculed by a group of buzzers echoing the hashtag #AtletHarusPaham on Twitter.

The hashtag emerged after a number of Indonesian badminton players mocked the government for not giving bonuses after they brought the Thomas Cup home to their homeland.

In some uploads, the buzzers displayed unsightly images. One of Indonesia's badminton heroes, Jonatan Christie, was displayed.

"It's not that I don't want to take it down, but I'm getting ready for it," wrote Twitter account @sasyarmdni, who ended the post with the hashtag #AtletHarusPaham.

However, Indonesian badminton lovers responded with the hashtag #ApresiasiAtletBadminton instead.

Badminton lovers hit back at the government for allegedly paying buzzers, saying that the government was washing their hands after being negligent in appreciating the struggles of badminton athletes.

"When the government can't give appreciation to athletes, but they can pay buzzers to get athletes down. How stupid. #AthleteHarusPaham is the stupidest hashtag," wrote @yuyurinayu.

Instead of responding to the buzzer attack, Jonatan Christie preferred to post photos and videos showing his concern for the victims of the eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java.

"Let's help our friends who need our help there," Jonatan wrote on his Instagram story.

Indonesia brought the Thomas Cup back to the homeland after 19 years.

This happened after the national team won 3-0 over China in a match that took place in Denmark, October 17.

Previously, Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali stated that the Thomas Cup was a single event, so there was no proposal to give bonuses to the athletes.

However, in a virtual press conference on Saturday (4/12), he said otherwise. "This is not due to public pressure. We have coordinated with the Finance Ministry. So, we really follow the rules," said Amali. (antara/mcr15/mcr20/jpnn)
