'Unusual' Spike in Covid-19 Cases in Singapore

jpnn.com, SINGAPORE - Singapore’s Health Ministry has said that it is looking into an "unusual surge" in Covid-19 infections after the it reported over 5,000 new cases on Wednesday (27/10).

This number was the highest since the start of the pandemic.

"The infection numbers are unusually high today, mostly due to many Covid-positive cases detected by the testing laboratories within a few hours in the afternoon," the ministry said in a statement.

The government will continue to closely monitor developments over the next few days.

Singapore also recorded another 10 fatalities from the disease on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths from Covid-19 in the country to 349.

The country extended some social restrictions last week for about a month in order to ease pressure on its existing healthcare system.

Singaporean authorities have implemented a number of restrictions, which include limiting social interactions and eating in restaurants for two to slow the transmission of the new coronavirus.
