jpnn.com, JAKARTA - Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid has responded to an alleged explosion around the house of the parents of human rights activist Veronica Koman in Jakarta.
Usman said that this senseless attack had scared and traumatized Veronica's parents.
"The authorities must immediately conduct a thorough, transparent, impartial, and independent investigation into the incident. Veronica Koman's parents must also be ensured for their safety," Usman said in a statement, Monday (8/11).
He mentioned that the terror made against Veronica's parents had also occurred before.
Once, there were two unknown men that unloaded packages in front of their house. The packages then caught fire moments later.
As a peace activist, continued Usman, Veronica had the right to freedom of expression, which must be protected.
"The Indonesian government has a primary responsibility to protect human rights defenders like Veronica, especially to prevent further escalation of attacks," he said.
Previously, two unidentified men riding a motorbike threw three packages into the garage of Veronica’s parents' house.
