Police said the teenager had been arrested immediately.

Those who lost their lives were girls aged 14 and 17 and a boy aged 16, Sheriff's Deputy Michael McCabe said.

The motive for the shooting was not yet known.

One of the teachers was injured, while the other victims were students at Oxford High School, about 65 kilometers north of Detroit.

The suspected shooter was a sophomore at the school and is believed to have committed the act alone.

The suspect was caught without a fight after firing 15 to 20 shots, McCabe added.

"The whole thing lasted five minutes," he said.

The suspect did not provide any information to police, and he demanded his right to an attorney after his parents advised him not to speak.

Abbey Hodder, a 15-year-old student, told the Detroit Free Press newspaper about Tuesday's shooting.

She, she said, was in the chemistry classroom when she heard the sound of glass breaking.

"My teacher kind of ran out and was scrambling," she said.

"The next thing I knew I saw he was pushing tables. It's part of school protocol to barricade, so we all knew, barricade, barricade down. And we all started pushing tables."

McCabe praised the high school's alertness in dealing with shooting incidents and carrying out an orderly evacuation.

US President Joe Biden has been briefed by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan of the shooting, White House spokesman Jan Psaki told reporters.

This latest shooting at a US school is likely to reignite the debate over gun control and mental health care. (ant/dil/mcr20/jpnn)
