Founder and lead instructor at Jakarta Defensive Driving Consulting (JDDC), Jusri Pulubuhu, said wearing a seat belt did not necessarily ensure someone to survive an accident. However, he said, it could prevent the fatality of accidental injuries.

"It should be understood that wearing a seat belt does not ensure that we are safe, but it reduces the risk of serious injury from a fatal accident," said Jusri when contacted by JPNN.com, Friday (5/10).

Jusri said that data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that 54 percent of serious accidents had a reduced risk when wearing a seat belt.

"This is with a note that we must use the seat belt properly," he emphasized.

In addition, Jusri also explained how to use a seat belt.

He suggested that the use of seat belts should refer to the 3Rs, namely tight, flat and low.

"The seat belt must not be folded. Make sure it must be in good condition and there is no tear," said Jusri. (ddy/mcr20/jpnn)
