Three Chinese Workers in Manado May Have Omicron: House Member

jpnn.com, JAKARTA - Three Chinese workers in Manado, North Sulawesi, may have contracted the Omicron Covid-19 variant, House Commission IX member Netty Prasetiyani Aher has revealed.

"These three Chinese workers who transited in Manado have been declared as probable Omicron patients," said Netty in Jakarta, Sunday (19/12).

Indonesia recently detected its first case of Omicron, a patient with the initial N who was a janitor at the Wisma Atlet emergency hospital in Jakarta.

Netty asked the government to limit the access of travelers from abroad. She also urged for strict PCR tests, isolation, and quarantine for international travelers who arrived in Indonesia.

She said that the government needed to map out the distribution of Omicron.

Moreover, the government must educate the public regarding the characteristics of the Omicron variant, so that they would immediately report to the authorities if they suspected any probable cases, she said.

"We should not make a fuss about the entry of Omicron, but the public should know how to take mitigation steps," she said.

In addition, said Netty, the government must improve the preparedness of domestic health facilities and infrastructure in anticipation of a spike in Covid-19 cases.

"We don't expect Omicron cases to increase, but being prepared to deal with it is mandatory. In addition to this, vaccination must be accelerated by ensuring the procurement of vaccines and their proportional distributions," said Netty. (mcr10/mcr20/jpnn)
