jpnn.com, WASHINGTON DC - United States President Joe Biden has not hesitated to address leaders of other countries that he considered undemocraticly elected.

That is what happened to the President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega after the three-term leader was re-elected in the presidential election held on November 7.

On Tuesday (16/11), Biden announced that all Nicaraguan government officials must not set foot on the territory of the US.

The ban applies to all publicly elected officials, members of the security forces, judges, regional heads, and anyone deemed to have trampled on democracy in the central American country.

Ortega's wife and Vice President Rosario Murillo are also on the travel ban blacklist.

"The repressive and abusive acts of the Ortega government and those who support it compel the United States to act," Biden said.

The US and its allies, Britain and Canada, have accused Ortega of using dirty methods, including jailing political rivals and silencing the mass media, to become president for four terms.

The three countries were also compact in applying sanctions to a number of top officials of the Ortega regime.

Several other American countries have also questioned the re-election of Ortega.

Last Friday, the Organization of American States (OAS) voted for a resolution declaring that the Nicaraguan elections lacked democratic legitimacy.

As a result, as many as 25 countries agreed and seven abstained.

Washington has used asset freeze sanctions and travel bans to pressure the Ortega regime since Donald Trump was president.

However, all of that did not make Ortega and his minions tremble.

This is what makes analysts doubt Biden's new policy will have a significant impact.

Ortega, a former Marxist-leaning guerrilla group, dubbed the US the "Yankee Imperialist".

He also accused Washington of trying to undermine the electoral process in Nicaragua. This attitude has the support of a number of US rivals, including Cuba, Venezuela, and Russia. (reuters/dil/mcr20/jpnn)
