jpnn.com, AMERIKA - United States President Joe Biden has appointed former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to oversee the planned $1 trillion infrastructure project, the White House said Sunday (14/11).

Landrieu, also a former Democratic lieutenant governor of Louisiana, led New Orleans from 2010 to 2018.

He played a key role in helping the city recover from the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The House of Representatives passed a $1 trillion package of road, broadband, and other infrastructure improvements earlier this month. The package was passed by the Senate in August.

Biden will sign the infrastructure bill on Monday in a ceremony expected to attract Democrats and some of the Republicans who played a key role in passing the bill.

The bill is expected to create jobs across the country by deploying billions of dollars to state and local governments to repair collapsed bridges and roads, and expand broadband internet access to millions of Americans.

A separate US$1.75 trillion proposal aims to expand the social safety net in the US and promote climate change policies.

Biden has spent the last few months promoting the benefits of both laws.

The White House said the project would not add to inflationary pressures.

The infrastructure bill has become a partisan distraction.

Republicans complained that the Democrats controlling the House delayed their passing to ensure party support for social policies and climate change legislation, which Republicans rejected. (ant/dil/mcr20/jpnn)
