jpnn.com, ODENSE - The 2021 Denmark Open is like a "graveyard" for badminton players.

Many of them stepped off the field not because they finished the competitions but because of a storm of injuries that haunted the athletes.

In the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open on Friday (22/10), at least three countries withdrew from their match due to injury.

The first is the mixed doubles from Taiwan Lee Jhe Huei and Hsu Ya Ching, who chose not to continue the game against the representatives of Thailand, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

Lee and Hsu, who lost in the first game with 9-21, withdrew during the second game after trailing 3-11 behind Dechapol and Sapsiree.

Next was Sameer Verma from India, who could not continue the men's singles game against Indonesian player Tommy Sugiarto. Sameer chose not to play the second game.

Through his goodbye post on his personal Instagram account @sameerv1, the Indian player seemed a little disappointed that he had to pack his suitcase due to an injury.

"It had to end like [this] this time, DESTINY! The lower you fall, the higher you bounce!" he wrote.

The last was the withdrawal of Indonesian player Jonatan Christie from his match against Kento Momota from Japan. Jonatan, who had lost 13-21 in the first game, backed off entirely in the second game after the score showed 0-15.

A release from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) stated that Jonatan had an issue with his waist.

Prior to the three cases above, many other badminton players also chose to withdraw from their game due to injury at the 2021 Denmark Open.

Another Indonesian men's singles player, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, also suffered an injury and backed off after only playing for two minutes against Thomas Rouxel from France.

Then, there were the world's number one players of women's doubles Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan from China, who suffered an injury in the first round.

The density of tournament events that the badminton players went through might have caused many of them experience fatigue, which then led to an injury.

Two days before participating in the 2021 Denmark Open, the athletes had just fought in the 2020 Thomas Cup.

The head coach of Indonesia's men's doubles, Herry IP, said his players had been exhausted after competing in the Thomas Cup.

"All the players who participated in the Thomas Cup have lost their energy and focus. So, they do not play optimally," he said in the PBSI release.

Shortly fter the 2021 Denmark Open ends on October 24, the badminton players will again be faced with another major tournament, namely the 2021 French Open on October 26. (bwf/mcr15/mcr20/jpnn)
