Non-Permanent Teachers in North Maluku Unpaid for Eight Months

jpnn.com, MALUKU UTARA - Some non-permanent high school teachers in North Maluku reportedly have not received their salaries for months, which has prompted them to stage a demonstration.

Demonstration coordinator Ridwan said the North Maluku Education and Culture Agency had not paid them their salaries, which amounted to billions of rupiah.

"For eight months, the Education and Culture Agency has not paid the non-permanent teachers' salaries, which totals Rp 18 billion," said Ridwan in Ternate, Monday (20/12).

Protesters flocked to the North Maluku Legislative Council building, the North Maluku Education and Culture Agency office, and the North Maluku Governor's office.

During the protest, the teachers demanded a number of points.

First, they urged the North Maluku governor to investigate and take action against individuals in the North Maluku Education and Culture Agency, who had caused the delay of the salaries.

Second, they requested the governor to provide certainty of the payment.

Third, they asked the governor to remove the North Maluku Education and Culture Agency head.

Ridwan said the teachers had met with the governor, who promised to pay them by January 2022.

If the payment is not made, the teachers will stage another protest, according to Ridwan.

The governor promised to instruct the regents and mayors to immediately pay the non-permanent teachers in their respective areas. (antara/mcr20/jpnn)
