jpnn.com, JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics said that the current "Add Yours" trend on Instagram could be a type of social engineering, one way for cybercriminals to get to users' personal data.
The new sticker feature is prone to be misused by irresponsible parties to commit fraud or theft of personal data shared by netizens through "Add Yours" uploads on Instagram stories.

Simple questions asked in the sticker, such as variations of your name, age difference with your partner, and your address may end up leaking users' personal data.
According to the ministry, social engineering can manipulate individuals or groups to do something or submit information voluntarily.

Not only on social media, this mode can be run on any communication service, most often via mobile phone where a fraudster claims to be a customer service or financial staff of a company.
Usually, they ask for personal data or send a link to a messaging application or email.

Avoiding sharing too much on social media or other communication channels may help.
Data that can be used for personal verification such as full names, names of biological parents, identity card numbers, personal phone numbers, credit card numbers, and tax numbers should not be shared to the public.
You also may not share addresses, information on personal property such as vehicle numbers, as well as the number of family members.
Finally, you should not share technology asset information such as passwords to IP addresses.
"Don't be easily tempted by things that are trending," wrote the ministry. (antara/mcr20/jpnn)
