Mount Semeru Eruption Affects Whole District in Lumajang

jpnn.com, LUMAJANG - A whole district in Lumajang, namely Pronojiwo, has been affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru on Saturday (4/12).

National Mitigation Agency (BNPB)'s disaster information and communication center acting head, Abdul Muhari, said that this was observed from the Mount Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PPGA) at Gunung Sawur Post, Poncosumo hamlet, Sumberwuluh village, Candipuro district.

"The vibrations of lava floods or hot cloud avalanches start at 02.47 p.m. with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters," said Muhari.

Then, at 03.10 p.m., volcanic ash from the hot clouds of Mount Semeru, smelled of sulfur, led to Besuk Kobokan.

In addition, visual reports from several locations showed that they experienced darkness due to the volcanic ash.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) noted that the incandescent lava of Mount Semeru was observed with a sliding distance of approximately 500-800 meters, with the center of the avalanche located approximately 500 meters below the crater.

"The Lumajang Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has issued an appeal to the community and miners not to move along the Mujur and Kobokan Watersheds," Muhari said.

Members of the Lumajang BPBD, along with other members of a joint team, immediately headed to the scene across the Candipuro-Pronojiwo sector.

They carried out monitoring, rapid assessment, data collection, evacuation, and other actions deemed necessary in the emergency handling of the eruption.
