jpnn.com, SURABAYA - The Surabaya Detention Center located in Medaeng, Sidoarjo, East Java, will be expanded next year due to overcrowding.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights will expand the area to 2.5 hectares from the previous 1.5 hectares.

The ministry's head of regional office in East Java, Krismono, said that his office had received a budget of Rp 39 billion (US$2,7 million).

"The funds will be used to remodel the detention center, including changing its position from facing west to facing north," he said on Saturday (23/10).

A residential block and a technical office building will be built.

"The technical office will be made vertical with two to three floors. The building will be similar to the Cipinang Detention Center or the Salemba Detention Center," Krismono added.

According to Krismono, the residential block is set to have a capacity of around 400 people.

Head of the Surabaya Detention Center, Wahyu Hendrajati, said the new building would be able to accommodate 1,200 people compared to the current 504 people.
